Daily Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive in Nairobi (1 Night)

Nairobi works well as a soft landing before heading into the bush. Staying in the Karen or Langata area keeps you close to several of the city’s best wildlife experiences while avoiding most of the traffic heading out of town the following morning.

Many travellers use this first afternoon to visit the Giraffe Centre or the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage before settling in for the night and preparing for the start of the safari.

Drive Distance: Arrival point
Driving Time: —
Accommodation Style: Permanent tented camp
Example Stay: Wildebeest Eco Camp

Highlights:
• Visit the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage
• See giraffes up close at the Giraffe Centre
• Optional game drive in Nairobi National Park

Planner’s Note
Ol Pejeta is one of the most reliable wildlife areas in Kenya and a great place to settle into the rhythm of a safari. It also offers experiences you won’t find in national parks, particularly around conservation and night activity.

Days 1–3 — Ol Pejeta Conservancy (3 Nights)

Ol Pejeta is one of Kenya’s most successful conservation areas — and one of the best places in East Africa to see rhino.

Game drives here are varied and productive, with open plains, riverine woodland and regular sightings of black and white rhino, elephant and predators. On clear days, Mount Kenya dominates the skyline, adding a completely different feel to this part of the journey.

Drive Distance: 220 km from Nairobi
Driving Time: approx 4-5 hours
Accommodation Style: Camping, self-catering bandas or lodge
Example Stay: Ol Pejeta Campsites / Sweetwaters / Pelican House

Highlights:
• Rhino conservation and sanctuary visits
• High density of wildlife including lion, cheetah and elephant
• Possibility of night drives within the conservancy
• Views of Mount Kenya across open plains
• Lion tracking with telemetry equipment

This experience takes place within a protected sanctuary under guide supervision- -wildlife interactions like this are not typical on a standard safari.

Planner's Note
Spending four nights here allows you to properly explore both Samburu and Buffalo Springs without rushing. This is one of Kenya’s most underrated wildlife regions and often delivers some of the best sightings of the entire trip.

Days 4–7 — Samburu & Buffalo Springs (4 Nights)

Samburu feels completely different to Laikipia. The landscape opens up into dry, rugged terrain, centred around the Ewaso Nyiro River — a lifeline for wildlife in this harsh environment.

This is one of the most productive safari areas in northern Kenya, known for elephant, big cats and the unique “Samburu Special Five”.

Drive Distance: 140 km from Ol Pejeta
Driving Time: approx 3–4 hours
Accommodation Style: Camping or lodge
Example Stay: Samburu Public Campsite / Elephant Bedroom Camp / Ashnil Samburu

Highlights:
• Northern “Special Five” species including Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe
• Strong predator sightings including lion and leopard
• Elephant herds along the Ewaso Nyiro River
• Open, arid landscapes with dramatic light and scenery

Planner's Note
The Aberdares are not about ticking off species, but about experiencing a completely different side of Kenya. It’s a perfect way to slow the pace and finish the safari in a more peaceful and scenic environment.

Days 8–10 — Aberdare National Park (3 Nights)

The Aberdares are unlike anywhere else on this route. Dense forest, cooler temperatures and a completely different pace make this a strong contrast to the open plains of Samburu.

Wildlife is more elusive here, but the setting — waterfalls, forest and mountain scenery — is what makes this stop special.

Drive Distance: 160 km from Samburu
Driving Time: approx 4–5 hours
Accommodation Style: Forest lodges or camping
Example Stay: KWS Campsites / The Ark / Fishing lodge- self-catering

Highlights:
• Elephants and buffalo in a unique habitat
• Waterfalls and high-altitude scenery
• Quiet, less crowded safari experience
• Possibility of viewing wildlife from lodge waterholes

Best Time to Travel: Central Kenya

Central Kenya follows a distinct rhythm. While wildlife is more concentrated during the dry months, the seasonal rains bring a spectacular transformation to these diverse conservation areas and highland forests.

Best Overall: Dry Season

June – September & December – March

Peak months for wildlife viewing across Ol Pejeta, Samburu and the Aberdares. Animals congregate around permanent water sources like the Ewaso Nyiro River, offering consistent and exceptional sightings.

Green Season: Photography Focus
October – December

A beautiful time of rejuvenation where the savanna and highland forests turn lush. Ideal for birdwatching and photography, with particularly atmospheric mornings in the Aberdares and clear views of Mount Kenya.

Rainy Season: Ultimate Solitude
April – May

The long rains can make some forest tracks in the Aberdares more challenging to navigate. For those seeking absolute solitude and dramatic highland storms, it remains a uniquely rewarding time of year.
